Dr. Larry Towning, DDS, MD
Dr. Larry D. Towning was born in Yorkshire England. He grew up in a military family and traveled to many foreign and domestic Air Force bases and schools before his graduation from Maysville High School in Zanesville, Ohio.
After High School, he graduated from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy in 1981. He worked as a pharmacist at Gray Drug, The Ohio State University Hospitals, and Mount Carmel East Hospital while attending Dental School.
He continued his education at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, graduating with a D.D.S. degree in 1986. Upon graduation from dental school, he was accepted into the post-graduate Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency program at the Ohio State University Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University Hospitals and College of Dentistry. He completed his four-year residency in 1990.
He continued his education at the Northeast Ohio University College of Medicine where he received his medical degree (M.D.) in 1993. Although Dr. Towning has both Pharmacy and Medical Degrees, his practice is limited to the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Post Education Practice: East Ohio Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Incorporated:
Subsequent to graduation from medical school, Dr. Towning opened his solo practice limited to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Zanesville, Ohio, located at the Bethesda Hospital Doctor’s Complex.
In 1998, as colleagues and friends, Dr. Towning and Dr. Martin Lester Curtis merged their individual practices to form East Ohio Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Inc.
They then opened a satellite office in Cambridge Ohio. Dr. Curtis retired from practice in 2001. Dr. Towning and East Ohio Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Inc., then built a new state of the art Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery facility on Cliffhanger Way in north Zanesville. This was followed in 2010 by construction of a full scope office In Newark, Ohio to better serve our expanding patient and referral base.
In 2016, Dr. Towning’s youngest daughter, Dr. Claire Towning, completed her residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and joined her father in practice.
In early 2020. Dr.’s Larry and Claire Towning opened an office at the New Albany Health Care Center, North Westerville, Ohio.
In 2024 we began the construction of a new 8000 square foot Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery office in New Albany proper. The anticipated opening will be Winter of 2027. Our new address will be 5218 Forest Drive, New Albany, Ohio 43054
Our Doctors currently work at all three offices and serve our referral Doctors and patients in Muskingum, Licking, Guernsey, Franklin, Delaware, Knox, Fairfield, Perry, Morgan, and Coshocton counties
WE ARE A REFERRAL ONLY PRACTICE. WE ACCEPT PATIENTS ONLY UPON REFERRAL FROM OUR DENTAL AND MEDICAL COLLEAGUES. This practice model is unusual for any practice but allows our Doctors to be properly focused on our patients’ individual needs, and ensures continued teamwork and communication with your referring Doctor.

Dr. Martin L. Curtis passed away in 2013, after enjoying retirement, his children, grandchildren, and many hobbies, enduringly supported by the love of his life Mary Beth Curtis (nee Knock).
Dr. Larry Towning is a Board Certified, Diplomate, the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery since 1995
Dr. Towning has maintained his board certification since then, recertifying in 2004, and 2014.

Dr. Towning has given continuing education lectures at the Carl O. Boucher annual prosthodontics conference, The Muskingum Valley Dental Society, The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons annual meeting,
At multiple Academy of Osseo-integration Annual meetings, Dr. Towning has presented his original research regarding platelet growth factor membranes and grafting technique in dental implant surgery.
Dr. Towning is certified as an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) provider (through December 2017).
He also served as the District 7 representative to the ODA (2004, 2005)
He served on the Board of Governors, the Ohio State University College of Dentistry Alumni Society. 2014-2017
He was appointed by Governor DeWine to serve as President and Vice-Chair of the Ohio Medical Quality Foundation from 2021 to 2025.

Dr. Towning’s hobbies include fly-fishing, off-road motorcycle riding, fused glass art, photography, and traveling. He enjoys spending time with family, especially his six grandchildren.
